What Causes Chronic Vomiting?

Hi, thank u. my 64 yr old husband is suffering a bad bout of projectile vomiting. His stomach muscles are sore from it. He can t eat without it coming back up within half hour. He had diarrhea three days before this started but has not had too much in bowel movements since. He has had no fever at all. Nothing unusual in looks of vomit, watery mucous. He had flu shot back in August. He Takes Enbrel injections for RA.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Based on your description, he seems to have gastroenteritis. I would also like to rule out electrolyte imbalance (due to the diarrhea and vomiting) and a central cause for the vomiting.

Does he smoke or consume alcohol? Does he have any other medical issues (other than RA) or take any other medications? Did he ingest anything unusual or from an unhygienic place? Did he eat any raw /half cooked meat or eggs?

I recommend you:
- A physician consult
- Blood tests (complete blood count, electrolyte levels, kidney and liver function tests)
- Ultrasound abdomen, a CT of required
- CT scan of brain if clinically indicated
- Proper hydration with oral rehydration salts (replaces electrolytes and water)
- An electrocardiogram
- Anti emetic medication and intravenous fluids of necessary

Based on this we can find out what's happening. Electrolyte imbalance can lead to dangerous heart rhythms, so please see a doctor right away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
