What Causes Chronic Pain In Leg From Thigh To Feet?

During the past four months I have had increasing pains in my left leg, thigh area and now even my feet. It feels like I am walking on a box of rocks and lately the area all around my instep get hard as a rock and feels terribly swollen all of the time. I do have arthritis and my knees and back are always filled with pain but should I be running to an er room immediately.

Hello,

Pain in the leg may be due to the following conditions:
1) Lumbar spondylitis
2) Nerve root compression due to stenosis of foramen
3) Osteoarthritis
4) Lumbar disc prolapse with nerve impingement

The following are treatment options:
1) Pain medication like NSAIDs like tab. Ibuprofen or tab. Naproxen can be taken daily twice for 14 days.
2) Avoid prolonged sitting and prolonged standing.
3) The above medication may cause gastric irritation. So tab. Pantop 40 mg before food is advised.
4) If you have heart failure or severe bleeding disorders, better to avoid NSAIDs and use opioids like hydrocodone oxycodone and Tramadol twice daily for 14 days.
5) After certain degree of pain relief, physical therapy is advised to strengthen the back muscles and prevent further episodes of pain.

If your pain doesn't subside, please do consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
