What Causes Chronic Pain At The Back Of The Neck And Ears?

Hi, I have had severe pain at the back of my neck, along my jaw and my ears. I woke up with these symptoms on Saturday and today. The pain gets much worse if I cough, laugh or bend over. It feels like someone is squeezing the back of my neck, where my spine meets the base of my neck. I use flonase on a daily basis for sinuses and took 4 advil today. The pain did subside, but it has left me feeling exhausted and my head/neck is tender.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Acute sinusitis with nerve compression or irritation of surrounding neurologic structures can be part of such presentation. Taking pain killer would merely suppress the issue for particular time span, but you need a consultation with your primary care for proper evaluation and management with:
- Prescription of antibiotics as cefpodoxime with clavulanic acid, decongestant and supportive care
- Plugging ears with sterile cotton, avoid exposure to cold wind
- Postural management to avoid hyper flexion or extension, rotatory movements of the nape of neck.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
