What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Swelling Around The Left Hip?

I have a deep nasty cough from a cold or perhaps bronchitis. which my husband had 10 days ago. Trying to sleep, I went to a recliner to keep coughing down. Coughing brings up much phlegm and I have to hawk it up and blow my nose frequently. Suddenly, on the recliner, I noticed tightening of pajama elastic. ( I am 85 and weigh 108 lbs.) Then thickening of area right above hip and swelling around my left hip high at the waistline. It is now 3:30 am and a hardened area is present about the size of my hand on the left side right below my waistline. It is tight and a little painful. Is this serious? How do I treat it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I have gone through your query. Possibility of hernia should be ruled out in your case. Swelling of described size is most likely due to hernia. Cough can make this more prominent. A physical examination by general surgeon will be helpful to rule out this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nishad BN,
