What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Difficulty In Swallowing?

I have what I believe to be a cold but when I cough it is deep and painful. It continues uncontrollably until phlegm comes up. Eating makes it happen as well. It is difficult to breath deeply and though it started with a sore throat my throat is no longer sore directly inside my mouth but it is uncomfortable to swallow and hurts in my lungs especially where my neck meets my chest.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

A short course of antibiotics can be taken to control cough. Expectorant cough syrups will be effective.

If you experience difficulty in swallowing, conditions like lump or block in the food pipe must be ruled out.

An upper GI endoscopy may be required for the same. Consult a gastroenterologist and he will direct you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
