What Causes Burning Sensation And Discomfort In The Throat?

My 20year old daughter is studying abroad in Italy this year & for the past week has complained about feeling like something is stuck in her throat. She also takes a natural product called MacaHarmony and pH Quinessense (alfalfa supplements) to keep her body & moods balanced. She also takes fish oil w/vitamin D and probiotics. She has a history of anxiety, but that seems to be well controlled with regular exercise & journaling. She does nt feel sick like a cold or anything, but has likely experienced a slight shift in her diet since living in Italy (stronger coffee, more acidic foods like red sauce on pizza and pasta & the occasional alcoholic drinks on the weekends). I ve read about Gerd and thyroid as possibilities causing the feeling like something is caught her throat, but wanted to hear a doctors opinion. She does it have burning in her throat, just the feeling like something is stuck. I look forward to your reply, Melissa

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of constant burning sensation of throat which are pointing towards a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease which leads to release of oesophageal sphincter and causes excess acid production. But the symptoms can also occur due to allergic or infection . You should take meal in small and frequent intervals. Avoid large intake of meals at a time. You should exercise on daily basis. Keep bed little higher on head side. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order blood test , oral biopsy , saliva measurement and allergy test to confirm the diagnosis. For now avoid carbonated drinks , spicy food , alcohol and acidic foods. Take combination of antibiotic along with anti-inflammatory drugs. Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist for acid reflux.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
