Hi,
Postherpetic neuralgia is a painful condition that affects your nerves and skin. It is a complication of
herpes zoster. When the pain caused by shingles doesn't go away after the rash and blusters clear up, the condition is called postherpetic neuralgia. It occurs when a shingles outbreak damages the nerves. This result in chronic,
severe pain that can last for months. Common signs and symptoms of postherpetic neuralgia include- severe pain in different parts of the body that continues for 1-3 months, even after the rash goes away, burning sensation on the skin, even from the slightest pressure, sensitivity to touch or temperature changes etc. Certain anticonvulsant medications like gabapentin and pregabalin, painkillers like tramadol and codeine, tricyclic
antidepressant medications like
amitriptyline, steroids etc can lessen the pain of postherpetic neuralgia and especially, anticonvulsant medications stabilize abnormal electrical activity in your nervous system caused by injured nerves. You should consult your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and further treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
