What Causes Burning Pain And Itching After Epigastric Hernia Surgery?

I had epigastric hernia surgery with an incision made above my navel. Upon removing the staples, my incision appeared closed but about an hour later, I was bleed profusely due to half of it still being open. My general surgeon treated the area with betadine solution and steri-strips. He changed the strips yesterday and used the same method. Ever since, my skin has been burning and itching. Can I be allergic to something? And do I have to keep the strips covered at all times?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is due to wound infection. Nothing much to worry as the symptoms will settle once the wound is healed.

You can apply topical antibiotics after cleaning with soap and water. Better to keep steri-strips to prevent wound gaping.

You can take antihistamines like Cetirizine for itching.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
