What Causes Burning In Tongue After Having Blood Transfusion For Anemia?

I have been diagnosed with severe anemia (7.1 hgb) and had to have a blood transfusion. I am now experiencing a severe burning of my tongue. I have a "cotton mouth" and I try to balance that out by drinking a larger amount of water. Can you give me any advice as to what this might be?

Brief Answer: BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME..

Hi..
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have gone through your query and can understand your health concerns..

As per your complain you are suffering from Burning mouth syndrome which is characterized by burning pain in different mucosal surfaces in mouth and the most common to involove is tongue..

It is occuring to you secondary to low iron levels in body as low iron , Vitamin B and folic acid levels are seen to be a causative factor for burning mouth syndrome and it is ultimately due to DRY MOUTH and dry mouth is also occurring due to iron deficiency...

I would suggest you to consult your physician and get a proper blood evaluation done to check for iron levels in body and get proper treatment done..

For dry mouth you can take:
1. SALIVA SUBSTITUTES like Artificial saliva containing Methyl Cellulose which can be instilled several times in mouth for lubrication..
2. SALIVA STIMULANTS like sour candies, lemon drops and sugarfree chewing gums can be taking multiple times a day as they stimulate saliva flow..
3. In severe dryness of mouth PILOCARPINE drug is given as it increases saliva flow from glands..
4. Drink plenty of cold water as it will help in hydration as well reduce inflammation and burning..
5. Sucking ice pops will relieve..
6.Swishing the mouth with numbing liquids will help in relieving burning and pain..
7.Maintain a good oral hygiene..

Hope this information helps..
