What Causes Bruising On Leg?

I'm 52, 5'7'', 140 pounds and female. The only prescription drug I take is estratest hs for my menopause symptoms. For some reason, I bruise easily. Yesterday, my left leg, from the knee down, developed a bruise that kept growing downward until it reached the ankle. There was (and still is, but smaller) a bump in the knee. The bruise looked pretty bad and I hadn't injured myself, so I went to the hospital. X rays turned out well, but the result for the PT blood test was 14.6 (slightly high). They gave an anti-inflammatory shot and told me to visit an internist (which I don't have) tomorrow. The large bruise now looks lighter, purple and yellowish. What caused it in the first place? I'm a healthy and very active and fit woman. I may have hypertension, but I don't have this diagnosis from a doctor yet. I just know by having taking my blood pressure in several occasions. Today at the hospital, I had 130/94. Please give me advice.
