What Causes Brownish Black Vaginal Discharge 10 Weeks Postpartum?

Hello I m 10 weeks postpartum and i have a brownish black vaginal discharge. I stopped bleeding and the same discharge around 4-5 weeks. I m exclusively breastfeeding. This is my 3rd baby. I feel like it is my uterus contracting because i have mild abdominal pain and my legs are achy. Is it normal to have this sort of vaginal discharge?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, greetings! Vaginal discharge in between 4-6 weeks after pregnancy, called lochia, is normal. Lochia maybe red coloured initially, after which it turns brown and then yellow. The main cause of lochia is involution of uterus, i.e., the uterus returning to its normal size. Discharge at 10 weeks maybe a cause of concern. It may point towards a cervical/uterine tear. I suggest you visit a local gynaecologist for a check up. U may have to go for an ultrasound abdomen to investigate further.
