What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge?

At least once a day when I urinate, I notice that there is a darkish colored piece of tissue in the toilet. This happens even when I m not on my period. I did get the Mirena my 7th week after childbirth. I have had the Mirena for a little more than 2 1/2 yrs now. Also, I occasionally have just a brownish discharge. This is also when not having a period. Is this anything to be worried about? Thank you very much! Seffie.

Hi,
If you notice the tissue regularly, then it is definitely not normal. You should see your health care provider to clarify the situation. The discharge could either be some endometrial tissue, breakthrough bleeding which has clotted in the vagina, shedding polyp etc. A local examination can help to identify the cause. A trans-vaginal sonogram also should be done to know the status of the pelvic organs. The position of the IUD should also be noted. Please maintain genital hygiene and avoid tampons. Hope this helps.
