What Causes Breathlessness After Switching To MS Contin From Oxycodone?
Hi. I ve had 3 major back surgeries and require pain therapy. My medication (Oxycodone 15 mg. 4 times daily) was recently switched to MS Contin 15 mg 2 times a day when my Pain Management Doctor retired. I have asthma and had a heart attack in 2006. Apparently my body can t take this medicine as I ve had severe shortness of breath and rapid, irregular heartbeats since starting this new medicine. I ve called the new doctor 4 times, no call back. What can I do now?
The MS Contin is opioid with same efficacy as morphine, fentanyl, hydrocodone and oxycodone. The breathlessness may be part of over dose of the MS Contin in comparison to Oxycodone through respiratory suppression at central pathway. A discussion with your doc for dose adjustment is best recommended from this platform for your well being at earliest.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
