What Causes Breathing Difficulty And Swelling In The Legs?

My wife is 77 and has left side neglect because of a massive stroke a little over a year ago. She has had edema but has managed it by raising her legs to the level of her heart and by using Bumetanide. The last few days I have noticed a swelling in both lower legs. She complains that she has trouble breathing and I hear her taking deeper breaths to help. She is using her walker to get to the bathroom. She has a pacemaker because of aFib just before the stroke. How concerned should I be before contacting her Cardiologist or primary on Monday? Or Tuesday? Thank you for your time and concern! R. Morden

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hello, my name is Dr Olgeta Xhufka. I understand your concern. It seems she is suffering cronical heart failure. She can take a bigger dose of bumetanide to help her breath. Of course it is serious concern.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
