What Causes Blood In Urine In Elderly?

A healthy male, 78 years of age has been finding blood in his urine for the past month or so, infrequently, but in the past day, finds blood in his urine constantly - all today. There is no pain, but it should be noted that he has been on prostate medication for 3 or 4 years.

HI, thank you for asking us on HCM!

The blood in urine may be result of many Urinary Tract diseases and from different origins too. Blood in start of urination indicates bleeding from urethra or prostate. Bleeding during the whole urination indicates bleeding form urine bladder, or from upper urinary tract like ureters or kidneys. A severe infection may cause blood in urine but in this case there are no other symptoms like pain or burn in urination or fever.

I'd suggest a full Urinary tract examination, and a urine test too. Have an appointment with an urologist as soon as possible if bleeding continues.

Take care!
Dr Eriol.
