What Causes Bleeding While Having Pregnancy Symptoms With Positive Result In HPT?

I recently found out I am pregnant (well I believe) I have taken multiple test and everyone have came out positive.I have had all the other signs as well, rapid weight gain, tenderness and growth in breasts, crazy mood swings, uncontrollably emotions, people telling me that I am before I even say anything about it including people I don t even know. Extremely exhausted and sleeping for days not being able to perform my normal activities. I have been experiencing alot of lower back pains and abdominal pains at times. At times I (and others) have felt and seen some movement in the general area. I was under weight before this and the weight and swelling I have experience tho this does have me a little concerned. My main concern is I am still experiencing bleeding for about the last 3 periods (well scheduled ones) have all be very different the first one after intercourse I realized I all of a sudden was about a week in a half later then usually but really didn t think to much about it I did notice that it was alot lighter then normal( I have pretty consistent periods and fairly light with normal cramps except the second day those ones are extremely bad) Then by my schedule 2nd period I was even later then the last month which put me about 3 weeks off of normal monthly ones, and this one was way different It was extremely heavy and very very painful I almost took myself to the er but I choose to weight it out. I did notice I passed alot of clots but the mount of pain I was having worried me I would of thought I was having a miscarriage. But it wasn t until after this one (about 3weeks after) is when I started having all the signs of being pregnant and that s when serveral test turned up positive and when I experienced all my other symptoms. Now today I started bleeding again its not as dark and cloth (yet) but its very bright red and some discomfort where its tender to wear a tampon and I m back pains and abdominal pains as well. So what should I do?

Hi,

I suggest you to rule out the most common causes by getting done physical examination, thyroid profile to rule out thyroid abnormalities, ultrasound to know the pregnancy status. Once the cause is treated it will subside. Early pregnancy bleeding is mostly due to deficiency of hormone progesteron, which supports maintenance / development of fetus.

About 20-25% of women have vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy. Half of them continue their pregnancy and deliver normally. Since the pain has reduced now in all probability you will continue with the pregnancy. Consult obstetrician and take progesterone to support pregnancy. Don't think about miscarriage. If the pain / bleeding increases, you need to go to the ER. If you were to have a D&C, if it is done gently it will not complicate your incompetent cervix. It does not lessen your chances of successfully trying again.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
