What Causes Bleeding Between Periods, Breast Senstitivity And Cramping?

Three days after my regular period it started again. This is day twelve. The last five days have been basically light with the occasional small clot. I am 45 years old and have had very regular cycles 28-31 days that last typically 5 days. I have noticed the flow has increased each month this past year. Should I be concerned? I ve had breast sensitivity and some cramping. I have low energy and have had more migraines than usual.

Hi,

Menstruation is an entirely hormonal phenomenon. Hormonal imbalances are usually the main cause of period and flow irregularities. Adolescent age when the menstruation starts and about 45 to 50 years when it is about to stop are the usual time periods women suffer from menstrual irregularities. The irregularities that you experience at this age is called menopause. The age is usually hereditary. If your mother had menopause at about this age, then you might also have it at about this age.

There are several other reasons that can cause prolonged, heavy and irregular menstruation like having fibroid tumors in the ovaries or uterus, having inflammation in the female reproductive parts, some infection in ovaries etc. All these conditions are related with hormonal imbalance and so menstrual irregularities.

I would recommend that you should see a gynecologist. He/she may ask you to go for blood tests to determine level of female sex hormones in blood and may also ask you to go for Ultrasonography (USG) to rule out any disorders associated with the reproductive organs. If hormonal imbalance is found, you may have to take medicines that control hormonal levels and some medicines that enhance blood clot formation like tranexamic acid. If some organ problem is present, it may have to be treated accordingly.

The feelings of breast sensitivity, cramping and migraines will disappear when the hormonal imbalance will be cured. You may take pain killers available over the counter to feel relief from pain. Long menstrual cycles do drain you of energy so you might feel weakness. Taking high energy balanced diet, lots of liquids and resting when you can will help you feel better.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
