What Causes Blackening And Detachment Of Nails From Nail Bed?

Hi I m Michelle, my question is about my nail condition. I have lived with this problem for over 15 years, one by one they are turning black and thick also very raised and disfigured. I have had a bioptcy on one nail to see if it was cancer and it was not I was told my condition was hereditary. This started with one nail I hit it really hard and it became detached from the nail bed and ever since then each nail one by one turned black, please help, it is sooo embarrassing.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
You might have developed fungal infection.
Your description matches with that.
Such infection of nails is called as onychomycosis.
Usually fungal infections are itchy and recurrent.
Please get a KOH mount done,
This can confirm the fungal etiology.
Treatment can be with oral antifungals as well as with topical antifungals.
Treatment must be continued for at least 6 months to prevent recurrance.
Please meet a dermatologist for exact diagnosis.
Let me know if you have any other doubt.
