What Causes Black Discoloration On The Tongue Of An Infant?
I noticed a black / brownish color on my almost 2 month olds tongue! It's the whole back of her tongue. It wasn't there 3 days ago . I've also given her gripe water more here in the last two days than I have before . The first couple times we used gripe water it was like once a day or once every day or so for her hiccups . But within the last two days I've used it 3 times a day . Could the gripe water be the cause of the discoloration? She's not on antibiotics or anything and neither am I . She's breastfed . I don't take any medications or anything . She recently had thrush so I check her mouth on a regular basis just to make sure everything looks okay. Just seeing this has freaked me out
It looks like black hairy tongue that can be due to either bacterial or fungal infection on a guess or due to giving any medication. Gripe water has less probability of causing such symptoms. Although it is harmless but still needs proper evaluation. You should consult a pediatric dentist and get evaluated. You can be advised to clean her tongue with an ultrasoft toothbrush or a piece of gauze. If fungal infection still persists then antifungal medication like Candid mouthpart can be advised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
