What Causes Back Pain Radiating Towards Waist After An Abdominal Hysterectomy?

I had an abdominal hysterectomy 6 weeks ago today. Both ovaries were left in place. Today was my first day back at work and I had to leave due to aching pain in my back and around my waist after sitting at my desk for a couple of hours of and on. What could this be? and what can I do to alleviate the pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The most common cause of backache after hysterectomy is poor posture or incorrect resting posture. Never keep the bed head raised while on bed, it gives stress & strain to the normal spinal curves, uncomfortable mattress or pillow can be a cause, do not get out abruptly from the bed after hysterectomy but first get on (roll on) to your side before you get up.

To get rid of the pain change your mattress & pillow, do lower & upper back exercise under the guidance of a physiotherapist. While sitting make sure that the chair as a supportive back rest.Soft tissue massage may help, maintain good standing and sitting posture. You can take pain relieving medications if needed(eg, Combiflam, one SOS when required).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
