What Causes An Enlarged Lymph Node On The Neck Beneath The Jaw Bone?

Hello Dr. Rynne,
I am a 24 year old female and I have recently noticed an enlarged lateral nuchal lymph node on the back of my neck on the left side. It is about 1 cm. I also have another enlarged lymph node on my neck just beneath my jawbone on the right side. The latter I noticed few months ago.it's still there and not changing.
Do I have to worry about this and arrange an appointment with my physician?
I appreciate your help Doctor. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,

As per your complain swollen and painful lateral nuchal lymph node and also one under the jawline can be due to two reasons:

1. It can be due to a swollen lymph node secondary to infection.
2. It can also be due to tumor of lymph node known as Lymphoma.

You should get it confirmed by consulting a General Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis. You can also be advised to get investigations done like x ray or MRI of the nodes along with FNAC/Biopsy and treatment can be planned accordingly.

As of now you can do alternate warm and cool compresses over the swelling and take Ibuprofen for pain.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
