What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell After Tooth Implantation?

I had a bone graft for a tooth implant a year and half ago. Since the beginning of February I have had medicine type smells and burning smell. I asked my dentist if it could be from implant and he said no. However, he did look at panoramic x-ray I had done in Feb. and there is a large dark spot in my right sinus. Could this be a polyp and do I go to GP to check it out further?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Altered sense of smell is not appearing to be due to implant placement and it is most probably due to sinus related problem..
There is a possibility that if you have perforation in sinus if the implant is in upper jaw..
As there is a large dark area in the sinus cavity it should be further evaluated by a PNS View x ray of the sinuses..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics, decongestant nasal sprays and if there is any perforation or Polyp then endoscopic sinus surgery can be advised..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
