What Causes Allergic Skin Rashes On The Body After Taking Amoxicillin?

Hello, my 6 yr old daughter had a allergic reaction to amoxicillin 3 weeks ago. She fever and red rash all over body. It was stopped and a different one was ordered but it did not take care of ear infection. The thurd drug was completed last week. She then developed rash again all over and itching. No fever. Called pharmacy and was told her antibiotic had amoxicillin in it. That was Monday. Today Wednesday, she has bruises all over her legs thighs to feet for no apparent reason. Should I notify her doctor tonight?

Welcome to the health care magic members,

I have understood your query and concern regarding your daughter.

Ampicillin / amoxicillin contain penicillin in it and some children develop skin rashes while taking one of these medicines. Rashes can be hives (raised, itchy red and white swelling or it can be maculopapular (flat, red rash covered with spaced patches). The rash usually goes away within hours or up-to a week after stopping the medication. Your daughter is allergic to penicillin containing drugs so always check before giving her any antibiotic. For rashes, you can give her Benadryl but if she develops or has developed any signs of serious allergy such as increased hives, swelling in various parts of body, effort in breathing, wheezing sounds then please do not delay in consulting your doctor.

Hope this answers helps. Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Khoja
