What Causes Acne In The Pubic Area?

Hello, I have a small bump that looks like acne near my pubic hair above my vagina. I ve had a couple of these before, but I ve usually found ingrown hairs due to shaving, and they go away once I pull the hair out. But I m worried it might be something more; what else can I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,welcome to HCM!
Your symtoms may be caused by folliculitis. The spots are, in fact, an inflammation of the hair follicles, and they appear as red.
Treatment consist in:
-Wash the area twice a day. Pubic acne often stems from microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi, growing in the area. You can use antibacterial soap or body wash or try an antibiotic ointment.
-Keep dry. Moisture, such as from sweat, enhances the growth of germs that contribute to folliculitis. You may want to use a blow dryer two to three times per day.
-Take a break from hair removal
-Use compresses to relieve discomfort during healing
-Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing
Hope my answer was helpful. If you have another question I'll be glad to answer.
Regards,
dr.Dorina Gurabardhi!
