What Causes Abdominal Discomfort, Facial Pain And Nausea After Alcohol Consumption?

This past Saturday I had a night of drinking at the club & ended up puking a little later on. The next day of course I had a bad hangover but very different than the usual. My whole body was sore even my face but more so in the abdominal area. I was extremely nauseous the entire day & had little appetite. But my worry is that it s now Monday and I still have an aching pain on my right side under the rib and a sort of pressure its especially painful when im standing & try to stretch myself backwards or if i press on it. Im aware that its my liver but I want to know what s going on in There. I m a 19year old female.

Hello,

You are suffering from hangover, soreness of the body (abdomen) and face. Loss of appetite and nausea and pain on the right side under rib. You are suffering from alcoholic gastritis. Consumption of too much alcohol can leave you with a swollen face, feet or hands, along with a hangover.

Headache and hangover are common side effects of drinking too much alcohol. You are feeling bloated, have loss of appetite, regurgitation of food, facial pain abdominal swelling, etc. Excessive alcohol consumption causes inflammation of the lining of the stomach thus causing pain and severe stomach cramping, irritability and vomiting.

You are suggested to take PPIs, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, probiotics to encourage helpful gastric bacteria. Take adequate water and fluids to avoid dehydration. Take rest, you will be fine after 24-36 hrs. If you are still uncomfortable, get clinically examined by a GP, you may need antibiotics. Antibiotics will help to control certain types of GI bacteria that may contribute to the irritation and damage.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
