What Causes Abdominal Bloating?

Me and my girlfriend go to school at the same university and are from the same town back home. She is concerned because whenever she is home she has normal bowel movements, no bloating, and feels fine. Whenever she is here at school she gets bloated, can only have a bowel movement about once a week and feels bloated all the time. Is it the water? Or perhaps the 500ft difference in elevation? What can be done to fix this? Thanks.

hello concerned boyfriend.thanks for writing to HCM.
I have read your query and understand your concern is regarding the bloating you girlfriend is experiencing

Coming to the query,you have mentioned the symptoms are constant bloating and constipation,which is more so at school.
no,normally water or the 500ft elevation doesnot cause the bloating.

I would suggest the following if she was my patient:

-increase fibre content in diet(25g/day)avoid gassy vegetables like potato,beans etc
-drink plenty of water
-avoid carbonated drinks/artificially sweetened foods/chewing gum etc
-go low sodium on diet,eat slow and have small meals regularly
-take pantoprazole twice daily for a week and see how it is
-ask her to exercise 30-45mins a day
-try to take probiotics like yogurt
-liquid paraffin 15ml twice daily for a week for constipation
-ask her to relax and not to resist urge of passing stools or postpone them.

All this will help your girlfriend to go bloating free.
