The commonest cause I can think about is nerve entrapment at the back due to muscle spams or so. sciatica can start in the same way. First of all, stop any exercises and avoid lifting heavy weights. Take full bed rest for the symptoms to settle. Get clinical examination for the symptoms. MRI of the lower spine to see for any slipped disc or so. Medicines for muscle relaxation. Local heat and rubefacient liniment. Opinion of an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon as would the findings be for further management, Physiotherapist's help if advised by your doctors.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
