As per your history,The lump requires an examination to determine if it is on the top (wrist side) or palm side of the hand. Fixation or movement with hand open/close maneuver is also important. If it is on the top it is more likely related to an injury or poorly healed fracture; however there are other possibilities. On the palm, it is more likely to be a ganglion. The doctor may ask for Tests including X-rays, scans, blood tests and particularly in the hand electrical tests (known as EMGs or Neurophysiology). These may be used to help make or confirm a diagnosis after your detailed history and examination. With solid lumps in the hand the diagnosis is usually obvious after listening to and examining a patient. Occasionally the surgeon will request an MRI scan to show the extent of the lump particularly if it is large. This helps plan the operation rather than making a definitive diagnosis which requires surgery If there is a chance the lump may be a cyst (see information sheet) the surgeon may attempt to suck out fluid from it with a needle (aspiration).
