What Causes A Perforated Eardrum?

Hi, I went to the doctor two days ago to get my ear checked after lots of pain and was told I have a perforated eardrum. I was wondering if I am able to continue to train and play Australian Rules football, but was not sure if I could because of the contact received during the game?
