What Causes A Mass Proximal To The Splenic Flexure?

Mr. Brown, an 86-year-old patient with suspected colon cancer, underwent a colonoscopy. A large mass was found 12 centimeters proximal to the splenic flexure. Which part of the colon is this located in? Trace the route of the colonoscope to the location of the mass.

Hi,

I can understand your concern.

The colon has 4 layers called within out
- mucous layer,
- submucous layer,
- Muscle layer,
- Serous layer
Growth from inner three layer can protrude in the lumen of colon which can be detected on colonoscopy.
Both benign (non cancer) and malignant (cancer) growth can be possible, it will come to know exactly after biopsy report.

Splenic flexure is a junction between transverse and descending colon situated in left upper quadrant of abdominal cavity.
12 cm proximal to splenic flexure means it is in descending colon.

Colonoscopy is done through anus where endoscope is passed through anus then anal canal, rectum, sigmoid colon, descending colon, mass and then splenic flexure.

Proximal means toward the side of entrance.

Hope this may help you, if so do vote.
