What Causes A Lump On The Back Of The Hand After An Injury?

My mom fell one day and she put her hands out to stop her. A couple days later she had a big knot on the back of her hand. It has since become discolored, purple and bruised looking and now the purple color is spreading up her wrist. Any ideas what this could be?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

As per your description it seems that your mother is having a hematoma that might have developed following a contusion caused by fall. It is nothing but a collection of blood following a blunt trauma. You don't need to worry regarding this as it will resolve by its own. We have to rule out a fracture even though it is very unlikely.
I suggest you to consult a general practitioner and get the following things done:-
(1)- Take an X-ray of her hand AP and oblique view to rule out fracture.
(2)- She can take analgesics like "aceclofenac" for pain.
(3)- Immobilize the affected hand, she can use a splint for this.
(4)- Apply ice packs over the affected area. It will help to decrease pain and swelling.
Most cases improve with this conservative measures. If doctor suspect a fracture she needs an orthopedic consultation.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
