What Causes A Hematoma After A Left Carotid Artery Surgery?

I recently had surgery in my left carotid artery. After surgery I had a huge hematoma. This surgery was 3 weeks ago. My surgeon has seen me and told me to keep resting and taking it easy. It seems to be going down but should I be doing something (ice, warm soaks) to help it dissolve. I didn t ask the surgeon because I had a brain freeze due to the anestitic(sp) so didn t think to ask questions.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Hematoma formation is common after surgery. You can apply ice to the area and take Tylenol if painful. As along as the hematoma seem to be shrinking, there is nothing to be worried.
