What Causes A Hard Painful Lump On Left-sided Abdomen Below The Pelvic Bone?

My husband has a hard lump on the left side of his abdomen just below the pelvis bone and to the lower left side of his belly button. He felt a pull/tear and has been in a lot of pain. I have been icing it down and giving him aleve (my husband will not take any kind of medicine and does not like doctors/hospitals) so for him to take aleve means he is really hurting. No fever, but the area feels hot. I am worried he could have a hernia.
