What Causes A Dark Bruise On The Leg And Severe Leg Cramps?

My husband had severe leg cramps last night. We could feel a very large knotted muscle in his thigh. Today he has a large dark bruise on his leg. Last week, he believes he hurt his back (a former injury) that led to leg pain. He felt like something ripped. This is likely related. Is the bruise an indication we should take some action other than rest?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, tendinitis should be ruled out however blood work up for LDH and CPK should also be done to rule out muscle rupture. Cold compresses and OTC analgesic like Acetaminophen can be used for symptomatic relief.

May need orthopedic review if persist. If bruising increases coagulopathy work up and Vitamins K and C supplementation may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
