What Causes A Crick And A Knot In The Neck?

I got a crick in my neck less than a week ago. I usually get them alot due to the way I sleep. Yesterday I felt a small knot under my skin where the crick was. Is this something that I should be alarmed about. I've never felt a knot there before, but I've never looked for one either.
