What Causes A Circular Red Patch?

I have a circular light red patch 1 inch in diameter with some scaly ness around the edge. I ve Had it about 3 or 4 weeks. Last week I applied some hydrocortisone and thought it disappeared. Yesterday it was swelled and red again. I thought it was a spider bite. What could it be?

It is probably tinea, which is a fungus as you said there was scaling on the margins. Apply an antifungal cream eg topical terbinafine for about two weeks and it should go away.
