What Causes A Bulge In The Spine Around The Area Of Spinal Fusion?

My mom had spinal fusion 3 years ago. Tonight she has a 2 inch bulge to the right of her spine in the area where surgery was done. The symptom checker indicates it could be an abcess, but nothing visable on the top of her skin. Her skin does itch in that area. Also, she hasn t been feeling well (tired mostly), but no fever. Could the surgery/ hardware be causing the problem? Thank you

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

The bulge to right of the surgery site could be due to abscess. Abscess site is usually red in appearance and warm to touch.

If the abscess is large, it may require incision and drainage. I suggest you to consult your treating doctor at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
