What Causes HSV Infection?

Hi, my name is Felicity and I ve just been recently diagnosed with HSV 1&2. It took me by surprise because I ve never engaged in any form of sexual activity. I ve never done anything orally nor have I received anything orally. I ve never used a toy and I have never performed any sexual pleasure with myself. I just recently went to a gynecologist, where she performed a speculation exam, I believe. She wants to perform another blood test in 8 weeks, because she said, Things aren t adding up. I agree, as well as my mother. I m really scared. I m also just getting over a case of bacterial vaginosis. I m now taking Valaciclovir for the outbreak. I just don t understand how this could ve happened. HSV 1 I could understand, but HSV 2, I don t understand. Is there a possibility I could ve gotten it without ever having any sexual relations? I m scared, because I feel like everyone thinks I m lying, but I promise I m not. I ve never drank or smoked, so I would ve been totally aware if someone was forcing themselves onto me. Please help me..I don t get this.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Herpes simplex virus (HSV), is an infection that causes herpes. Herpes can appear in various parts of the body, most commonly on the genitals or mouth. There are two types of the herpes simplex virus:
1. HSV-1: Also known as oral herpes, causes cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face.
2. HSV-2: is generally responsible for genital herpes outbreaks.

There is currently no cure for this virus. Treatment focuses on getting rid of sores and limiting outbreaks. Most of the times sores will disappear without treatment. However, your doctor may determine the need of one or more of the following medications:

1. Acyclovir
2. Famciclovir
3. Valacyclovir

These medications can help infected individuals reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others. Kindly consult your doctor for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
