Hi,

The matter of fact that your husband u/w this surgery makes him a strong man who can pass through difficult steps after the operation.

First of all the two things that we need to exclude at this instance are:
1) DVTs post surgery (pain and swelling over the calf area - needs u/s to rule it out
2) back problems (disc prolapse)

Assuming that you already ruled out diabetes, infection and vascular problems by lab tests and imaging, and assuming also that your husband isn't a smoker (if not I advice you to reach your doctor to do so) not uncommon after total knee replacement that patients experience swelling, hotness around the knees with aching sensation descending over the legs to feet, at this instance
1) elevation over 1-2 pillows of the affected foot (put the pillow under the knee and ankle for better comfort)
2) use ice packs (1-2 times a day - indirectly over the knees).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
