Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Can Cause High Fever Along With Headache And Chills In A Child?
My 6 year old has been with a high fever off and on for 3 days. It started at 103.7 and has fluctuated up and down with Tylenol and Ibuprofin, the lowest being 99.7 with hour doses in between. The fever has not broken. She started with a slight headache, has chills and tired. She feels good to play most of the day, but today she actually went to sleep at 5:45 saying she was exhausted. Any ideas before I take her to urgent care.
The most common cause of these symptoms-fever, headache, chills, and fatigue-would be a viral illness. Children can be infected by so many different viruses as they are being exposed to many for the first time, so their immune systems do not yet provide protection from these germs.
It is most reassuring that she acts normally most of the day.
If she had a serious illness like meningitis, she would be sick all of the time. Although, there is no documentation that giving a febrile child two medicines for fever is any better than giving just one, many parents give two.
Hope I have answered your query.
