What Can I Do To Alleviate Urinary Urge Incontinence?

Hi .I am a 68 year old female, with diabetes Type 2. I am taking Metformin, 1000 mgs. twice each day.
I have had 2 bladder infections in the last year. And recently, I have had the need to urinate frequenly,
sometimes barely making it to the bathroom immediately after the urge begins. Can you give me an idea as to what is causing this, and what I can do to alleviate this problem? Could this be due to a female hormone problem? Thanks.

Hi,

The frequency and urgency to urinate can occur due to hyperactive bladder, stress incontinence and urinary infections.

The decrease in female hormone levels can also contribute to this due to loss of strength in pelvic floor muscles. Urine analysis, culture, cystometric study are needed at this point to come to a definite conclusion.

If hyperactive/overactive bladder is diagnosed, medications to relax bladder need to be initiated. You may also do Kegels exercise to strengthen pelvic floor muscles.

Use an adult diaper if the incontinence is too troublesome. Please be advised to follow up with your primary provider whom can refer you to a urologist if needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
