What Are The Withdrawal Symptoms Of Gabapentin?

My husband, who is 74 years old, has been taking gabapentin prescribed to him by his neurologist for extreme vertigo for about 8 months. Because of some symptoms of confusion, anxiety, stomach upset and forgetfulness noted by me we let his dr know, and he suggested weaning him off of this medication. From 900 mg per day to 600mg for 3 days then 300 mg for 3 days then none. Can you tell me what the side effects of this kind of withdrawal may cause? He just did labs and all seems to be good.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Gabapentin is generally well tolerated, with common adverse effects including somnolence, dizziness, ataxia, and fatigue. It lacks significant drug interactions, as is not metabolized in the liver, does not induce liver enzymes, and is not bound to plasma protein. The medication is excreted unchanged in urine and often requires multiple administrations throughout the day because of its short half-life.Gabapentin is often initiated at a lower dosage and increased gradually until effectiveness is reached. Gabapentin should not be stopped suddenly or the patient may experience side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating ,diaphoresis, irritability, agitation, confusion, tachycardia, catatonia, and status epilepticus .
Since this is not your case i think your husband will not experience any side effects.
Hope it Helped!
Best Regards
