What are the signs and symptoms of viral encephalitis?

My son recently suffered from misdiagnoised viral enchephlitis. Don t know how they missed that one but anyway, should he have a follow up MRI to see if there has been brain damage? He still suffers from extreme fatigue and had to drop out of grad school and quit his research. It has been four months and he is finally starting to go back to it slowly.

Hi,

It is hard to comment on the misdiagnosis of viral encephalitis as you don't say anything regarding history. Manifestations most commonly consist in headache, vomiting, fever, seizures, increased sensitivity to light, changes in behavior, etc.

As for the need for MRI since I suppose there have been MRIs done at the hospital it is not necessarily needed. MRIs during the course of the disease have already shown the involved areas.

A MRI now would at most show scar tissue and wouldn't change much in management, doesn't show much regarding neuroplasticity, the recovery process at a cellular level.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
