What Are The Side Effects Of Long Term Use Of Corticosteroid?

I have been on a corticosteroid (asacol then budesonide) for some 20 years for collagenous colitis. I ve repeatedly questioned my GI about long-term effects, as I ve found no studies that indicate this med for use this long. My GI sluffs me off, saying it is not a problem. But isn t it harming my immune system and brain?

Hi,Thankyou for your question.
There are some side effects after taking corticosteroids for long term which needs to be carefully monitered. For example
1.Increase blood sugar level
2.High blood pressure
3.low blood calcium level
4.osteoporosis
5.decreased immunity so chances of different infections increased etc etc
As all above mentioned side effects can be avoided if keep eye on symptoms and blood sugar level, calcium level and B.P and taking the dose according to doctor's advice.
Regards.
