What Are The Side Effects Of Topomax?

Hi, I suffer from migraines and have been prescribed Topomax. Unfortunately I find that it makes my thinking very cloudy. I am only taking 20 mg though. What are my alternatives? I have considered reducing the levels until I can stop all together.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Topomax contains topiramate as ingredient which can cause common side effects like: mild dizziness, feeling nervous, numbness or tingly feeling, diarrhea, weight loss and symptoms of cold like sore throat.
Preventive medications used as migraine prophylaxis include:
1. Beta blockers like propranolol, metoprolol tartrate and timolol.
2. Tricyclic antidepressant like amitriptyline
3. Onabotulinumtoxin A
4. Pain relievers like naproxen
In case you need to stop current medication and switch over to another, it should be done under medical supervision only.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
