What Are The Side Effects Of Nitrofurantoin?

Hi, I have CIDP and am taking nitrofurantoin 50mg nightly for 6 mos. for a UTI that seems to be reoccurring. I am not sure if I should remain on it for this period of time although my doctor thinks it is safe. Is there any serious side effects from this frug for someone with a neuromuscular auto immune disease? Sue Richie YYYY@YYYY

Hi,

You should not take any antibiotic for six months as there is a chance of resistance and tolerance to that antibiotic. It can also cause gastritis, gastric ulcer, nausea etc.

Better to get done urinary culture and sensitivity report. Culture report will isolate the causative organism and sensitivity report will guide about effective antibiotic treatment. By this, we can prevent the prolonged use of antibiotics and drug resistance.
