What Are The Side Effects Of Geodon Drug?

hello...I am extremely concerned about the long term and short term adverse effect of taking geodon with the opiate Percocet. I have bee taking Geodon for over 5 years and also am prescribed 40 mg of Percocet. I know it can have an effect on my liver and kidneys, but have been on Percocet for 10 years at 40 mg per day. I am also finding that the opiates are at times not providing the relief that they used to, so unfortunately, I am supplementing my opiate dose with one or two extra percocet. I do have a legimate need for the Percocet, but am concerned that they are becoming less effective as the years have gone by. Can you tell me if there are any new treatment modalities that I could possibly explore. Should I investigate a pain management center, or would it be a good idea for my prescribing physician to seek other means to handle my dependency. Also, are there any adverse effects with the interaction of these opiates and Geodon. I am not against trying another method to control my pain, but after 10 years of Percocet, I often find that I am making excuses to not get off the Percocet. Could I go through a hospital managed detox safely, and find some other alternative that would help me. I am honest in admitting that I argue with my doctor about losing my percocet rx. and have made excuses to stay on them,,,after ten years, I have quite a relationship with them, and it hard to even consider any other alternatives. Shouldn t my doctor offer some other treatment modality? but I can t seem to not fight with her when , in the past she has mentioned other meds. I am a mess and I find that I tend to hoard a few each month in case I run out before my next script is due. I need some advice, please. Does the opiate affect the treatment process of the Geodon Thank you for any advice and direction you can offer. Thank you..I am seeking an independent professional that might see things from a clinical and professional view. I don t have money to pay sorry

Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

So, symptoms of things aren't working out. I'm just not feeling good upset stomach, some withdraw and some headaches. It can be indicative of narcotic dependence. Increasing doses of narcotic would be bad in that context. I cannot say in your particular case. I'm of course not able to diagnose, prescribe, on a particular person without actually being there. But, certainly, I can give the best general information about a particular drug or disease state that is applicable regardless of the particular person. And going up on narcotics, using narcotics outside of those prescribed, hoarding, etcetera is indicative of progressive problems. Geodon isn't going to work on pain nor addiction. You can come off in various ways. Taking something that blocks any of them from doing anything. If you take naloxone (blocker), then you probably go into withdrawal because it blocks all opiates out of your system. Taking less of whatever you are taking (taper). Going on another opiate and then stabilizing on that one then tapering that one off. And they work on pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
