Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took Boniva this month and followed the instructions and got very sick and nauseous. The other three times I took it with food and felt fine, but realized it would not work that way. Is there something else I can take for osteoporosis? My e-mail address is YYYY@YYYY . Thank you for any information you can give me.
Hi! I am Dr. Saddiq and I would like to respond to your query. What i could interpret from your description was, that you suffered from gastric side effects of Ibandronate (Boniva) but when you took it with food, you remained well. It is one of the most common side effects of these supplements that it can cause oesophagitis, the inflammation of esophagus (the food pipe) and can lead to strictures, if proper instructions are not followed. I would suggest that you strictly follow the instructions and avoid lying flat at least for an hour after taking these. Taking it with foods will decrease its absorption and efficacy so that is not encouraged normally. As far as the replacements are concerned, you can have Injectable forms of bisphosphonates in form of zoledronic acid given intravenously which have gastric safety profile then oral bisphosphonates and other ossien mineral complexes. Thanks for trusting in HCM.
