Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I would like to know what are the causes of having low blood pressure? My mother is 77 yrs old. She was taken to the ER because she was having a hard time breathing and her face was turning blue. Hospital informed us that her BP is low and that she needs to be admitted. After 2 days she was released and admitted again this morning due to her low BP. She is weak, in and out of her consciousness and awareness. She shakes when she is in any pain. We have not receive any understandable explanation regarding her health condition. Your help will be very appreciate. Her medical history are the following. Her doctor prescribed oxycodone for her pain. My siblings decided to take her out of her pain meds because it's not helping her with pain anymore. And the pain meds is not good for her at all. She is getting blood dialysis treatment.
Hi, Welcome to HCM, In old age, usually low blood pressure is due to less blood supply to heart and brain. Oxycodon itself can cause low blood pressure. it is good to withdraw slowly Oxycodon. Pain can again causes low blood pressure. Actually, she should be taken high energy food, rich in calories, but light for digestion. She should also be given small but frequent food. May be Oxycodon, itself is giving her altered consciousness, weakness, and low blood pressure. She is undergoing Dialysis, which gives me impression that, she might be having some electrolyte disturbances, and kidney disease. I may not be able to give you exact cause without seeing her, but the ultimate reasons could be above. it is better you ask her Doctor, or may go for second opinion. Wish her good recovery.
