What Are Chronic Diarrhea And Vomiting Suggestive Of?

My 85 yr old mother has had chronic diarrhea for about 2 months. She has been checked for C-diff and it is negative, she has now started having vagel episodes, while having a bowel movement and vomiting. No one can seem to figure out what is going on with her. All of her vitals are good. Ideas???

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Acute diarrhea is most commonly due to infection but if it continues beyond 4 weeks (chronic diarrhea), then other causes should be ruled out by testing. If the Loperamide is not working for you, you can consider trying Lomotil OTC (over the counter) or Peptobismol.

Probiotics should be used as well, these help to replace the normal bacteria in the colon and can often shorten the course of diarrhea. The probiotics can either be used on their own or in yogurts with probiotics

Remember to hold off solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms. Use fluids.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
